Expedition Leadership is a program designed for teenagers ages 14-17 who have completed the 9th grade. Applicants should have a desire to go on an 9-day backpacking adventure. Backpacking experience is not required, but applicants should preferably have significant hiking experience and be prepared to hike up to five miles a day. This focus of this trip is a 9- day backpacking adventure in the Flat Tops Wilderness of the White River National Forest in Colorado. Participants will learn backpacking skills, backcountry etiquette, Leave No Trace education, backcountry risk management. Participants will develop their leadership skills and learn about the history of the White River National Forest. At the end of the Expedition Leadership program, participants will have completed a Leave No Trace awareness course and will receive a certificate from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
This program involves an application and selection process that requires initiative and dedication from the camper. Steps of the application include submitting a letter of recommendation (for applicants who have not completed a prior Leadership Training Program), completing a set of supplemental questions, and a phone interview with the CCO Leadership and Trips Director.
Sunday: Arrive at CCO, Icebreakers, and camp tour
Monday: Team building and high ropes course (weather dependent)
Tuesday: Review trip route, pack food and gear, prepare to leave
Wednesday: Leave for Flat Tops Wilderness
Wednesday–Wednesday: Backpacking in the Flat Tops Wilderness area
Thursday: Hike out to trailhead, drive back to CCO
Friday: Debrief trip, clean gear, evaluations, relax
Saturday: Leave CCO. See you next year!
